The Years the Locusts Have Eaten

01 Feb

Yesterday on Twitter, a friend of mine posted the following statement:

It’s not too late to be who you might have been.

To which another friend of mine commented:

I hope you’re right.

This got me thinking about a Scripture in Joel…I love the way the New Living Translation says it the best:

The Lord says, “I will give you back what you lost

to the swarming locusts, the hopping locusts,
the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts.
It was I who sent this great destroying army against you.

I took the time a year or so ago to really delve into this verse. I wish I could find my notes on it, but since I can’t, I will begin again right here.

This Scripture is a promise from God. He says that He will give back the years that the locusts have eaten. But the coolest thing about this verse is that it describes the locusts. He doesn’t just say, the locusts have eaten those years; he specifically talks about those locusts and points out what they have done.

The Swarming Locusts:

These types of locusts are actually solitary creatures when food is in great supply. But beware…when fo0d supplies are scarce, they come together and cause serious damage to crops. What a picture of what Satan sends our way…those ”

swarming locusts” can wreak havoc on our lives and cause major damage to us.

The Hopping Locusts:

Because locusts are really grasshoppers before they start to swarm, hopping is natural. The problem with tons of hopping locusts though, is that they are annoying and they are everywhere! It’s just like Satan and his minions (yes, I made a Despicable Me reference), is that they are everywhere…annoying the mess out of us. They hop up and keep hopping in an attempt to distract us from everything we should be doing.

The Stripping Locusts:

When locusts swarm, it’s because they are in short food supply; so, when they swarm they strip the crops bare. What a picture! When we are swarmed on all side, we are stripped bare of the things that we want, need, desire, etc. We are left bare and destitute.

The Cutting Locusts:

Like all things, locusts have to cut their food in order to eat it. Can you picture this? Satan comes in and cuts us…and he can cut us deep. We are left bleeding; fodder for the locusts to eat.

All of these things cause us to writhe in pain while he strips us, cuts us, hops on us, and swarms us. He takes years away from us before we even realize it. I have felt for a while now that I have lived many more years than my 32 actual years on earth because of what I have been through (some my choices, some others have chosen). I have seen dreams lost and lives shattered that are now slowly on the mend. I cling to this verse. My dreams of being a wife were shattered years ago…I believe God will restore that dream sooner than I realize. My dreams of being able to be home for my son were shattered…I believe God will allow more time with him than I currently have. I know that he will restore those years for me. I cling to that.

Have you lost years to the locusts? Do you believe that God will restore those years?

This is really good, April. There were definitely years that I lost but I feel like that God is working in my life and making them up in spades!

I hope He does. I just don’t know if the locusts are gone yet.

Keep reaching out Jason and clinging to it because if they aren’t, when they leave, you will be repayed those years. Don’t forget Romans 8:35-39 and Psalm 116:1-2

Of course, I have to remind myself of those too!

Oh yeah, I’m a locust expert unfortunately. I spent too many years being devoured by Satan’s minions. (to borrow your phrase)
God has restored me and given back more than I ever had and certainly more than I’m worthy of. I now try honor Him with all He provides. I’m also sure that He will deliver you to where you desire with all the wisdom He required of you for when you get there.

Someone said something similar to this recently and I agree…with all the junk I’ve been through and the way it’s grown me up spiritually, emotionally, etc., I have to have great things just around the corner!
