The Christmas Story

13 Dec

I ran across this picture last night of my dad reading the Christmas story to my son and my brother. It’s such a precious picture to me of a tradition that is dying out in this day and age. I remember growing up and every Christmas we would read the Christmas story from the Bible. I remember the first year I got a Bible of my own and I was able to follow along as my dad read the story of the birth of our Savior. It has always been a precious memory for me.

Yesterday at our morning service, our pastor, Bro. Joe, spoke of the Christmas story. He read from Luke which tells the story from the beginning and he read from Isaiah where the story of Christ is foretold. And with tears in his eyes, he asked that we keep this story alive. That we tell our children the truth about what Christmas is really about…the birth of the man who would die for our sins. In a world where most believe that Jesus  and the story of His birth is a myth, we need to keep the real meaning and spirit of Christmas alive.

If you know me, you know that this is my favorite time of the year. I love the cold weather, the festive lights and the way people tend to treat others a little bit nicer (unless you are driving down the road). I love the feeling that comes with Christmas. But what I love the most, and I hope I convey to my son in ways that He sees, is that Christ came in human flesh, lived out a life that gave him all the same feelings and temptations that I face daily, did not sin, crawled up on a cross without hesitation, and died for me. If no one else were on this earth, I think he still would have died for me.

So, this Christmas, be sure that you and your family and all those you come in contact with, see more of Christ in your Christmas than anything else. Teach your children what this time of year is all about!

This economy is a blessing in disguise. All of a sudden we’re returning back to God, back to what Christmas means, and while the kindness bit is a little slow to catch on, we’re getting there. Change is in the air.

I agree with everything you wrote. Well said, and with passion as usual. I wrote one about my dad reading the Bible as well. I’ll publish it a little closer to Christmas. I’m gonna miss my dad reading his Bible at Christmas, it was our tradition as well. God Bless and thanks as always for sharing your heart.

I can’t imagine missing my dad at Christmas. I will say a prayer for you and hope that you can continue that tradition with your family in his stead.

We always read the biblical Christmas story. It’s a highlight. 🙂 That, and communion, served by the little ones (challah dipped in honey! 🙂
